Gowanus Canal: Brooklyn's Superfund Site - South Brooklyn Internet Inc.

A diver comes out of the Gowanus Canal after working on the flushing tunnel covered in black oily goo and is washed off before taking off the suit in 1999. To enter the putrid water, the divers were using suits that kept them from coming into contact with the contaminated liquid. Hoses brought air from above. Once out of the canal, they were washed down before removing any of their protective suits.
